What version number of the Dropbox Java SDK do you have installed? It's possible you have an older version from before this was supported for the delete method.
If you're not already using the latest release, currently v3.1.1, please upgrade to that and let me know if that doesn't help.

Yes, I was using 3.0.3. Moving to 3.1.1 resolved it,
