Help! Tried backing up Dropbox to my work's hard drive. Files have moved and I need to undo that.

Hi and thank you for any help you can provide.
I wanted to backup dropbox drive for work to our work drive. Dropbox created a new folder named "Henry _____"(my full name) and began putting files into that folder. In turn it's removing files from online dropbox which won't allow my boss to get them. It's 416am in the morning and I am trying to reverse these changes. I just wanted to make a proper backup of all the images me and my boss have taken. I didn't mean to screw it all up. This is dropbox standard.

Hey Henrylm2, let's jump right into this!

When you say that you wanted to Backup Dropbox drive, are you referring to your Dropbox folder, or something different?

Do you have Dropbox Backup enabled on your end? One more thing I'd like to clarify is if the files have been moved to a different path, or removed entirely.

As for reverting the changes, have you tried checking your deleted files page, or events page to see what you can restore from there?

Let me know more, and we'll take it from there.

    Hi Megan,

    Thank you for your response.

I'll try and explain it the best way I can. I was trying to move the sync folder to an external drive. I changed the dropbox location to the external E drive. Then I changed the "online only" option to "files available offline". It began to backup and sync.

I tried to go back through the settings this morning to reverse, but I'm not sure If I did it all correctly. The Dropbox Rewind feature isn't avail for me. I did check the events page just now. Didn't know that was a thing. Looks like over 6K photos were transferred to a private folder on dropbox with my name on it.

I've unplugged the drive. It keeps asking to either quit to revert things back to how it was, or relink. I hit quit. The program quits. I try to load it back up. Same things.

Hey Henrylm2, sorry to jump in here, but could please send us some screenshots showing the issue?

For example, a screenshot of this folder with your name on it and where it's located and a screenshot of the message you mentioned that asks you to quit or relink, would be really helpful.

Make sure to hide any personal info on the screenshot, before attaching it to your reply.

    Thanks!

    Hey Hannah,

Thank you for the message. I actually went ahead and reconnected the drive. I paused syncing and I'm trying to move it back to my internal drive. Dropbox isn't allowing that for some reason.

Is there any way your team could provide me a call, or is there a number I could call you guys at?

The team admin for your account will have access to phone Support. It's handled via a callback initiated in their Admin console.

OK. I believe I've gotten all of this down to two issues:

    1. Dropbox has tried to make a backup of the main admin *photos* folder for me. It created a photos folder inside my dropbox account and gave me only access to it. I...don't think it removed any files and folders from the admin account. I could be wrong.

    2. Dropbox won't allow me to relink the dropbox folder to my macbook drive. Right now my external drive is hooked up and syncing is paused. I want to remove dropbox from my external HDD without potentially losing any files.

I don't know how the hell I did all of this. I just wanted to make a copy everything in the drive for my boss. I didn't want anything moved.

I just went on my Boss's account. It looks like nothing was affected on his end. Just mine which is wonderful news. I was able to also re-sync the dropbox folder to my internal HDD space. There's just the issue now of duplicate files in the dropbox created folder it made for me and the one that my boss made. Any suggestions?

I appreciate you all trying to help me.

Hey Henry, I'll still need a visual, to make sure I understand what you're talking about completely.

Is it possible to send those screenshots?

Also, just to confirm, are you currently a member of a Dropbox Business team or do you have an individual Dropbox account?
