The Dropbox folder has been overwritten by mistake.

I managed to overwrite the single Dropbox file folder I had on my computer. When prompted to rename or put in another folder, I clicked the rename. Now the DB folder on my computer is empty (replaced by a newly named DB folder that is of course empty), and I have the newly empty folder on the DB cloud so I have nothing to restore. And I cannot seem to find a person at DB to explain all this to. Any suggestions?

Hey there PC72 - sorry to hear about this.

Can you please let me know your computer's OS version and the current version and status of the Dropbox desktop app as shown in your system tray/menu bar?

Also, are you seeing your files on the website, be it in the homepage or the events page

Let us know more and we'll take it from there.

    Hi

Below are all the OS details I can find.

I can't find anything about the Dropbox details you asked about. I only see the DB icon in File Manager, and that icon says no files are in it.

When I logon to DB online, there are no files there at all.

When I was trying to sort all this out earlier, I must have inadvertently opened another DB Basic account. It said it had found a DB folder on my computer and asked if I wanted to rename it or open another one. I clicked the wrong button and told it to rename. It must have overwritten my original DB folder on my computer. I should have another account on DB website with the email: [removed]. Perhaps my files are there but DB says it cannot verify that account.

I believe the current version is 208.4.5824 and status is up to date.

Hi from me as well, PC72! From your post, it sounds like you set up a new Dropbox account indeed and since it was empty, it overwrote your old Dropbox folder along with its files.

Besides the email address you provided, do you have any other emails that may be linked to your other Dropbox account? You can check both the inbox and spam folder of any email addresses you own and see if Dropbox has sent you anything there. If it has, you can try to sign in with that email address.

    Hello Nancy.

    Thank you for the response.

The original email account was [removed per Community Guidelines]

When I logged into that account to get a DB receipt, it said it could not find that email address, which is an older one. It was during my attempts to get this resolved and change to my current email address that I managed to create a new account with my current email [removed per Community Guidelines] and overwrite my folders. If any folders still exist they will be attached to the old email address @Arts.

    Thank you for your help.

Hey PC72, I hope it's okay for me to jump in here as well.

Just to confirm, when you try to sign in to dropbox.com with your old, original email address, what do you see?

I was originally looking to get a receipt for my DB account. I believe it said it didn't recognize the old email address. I attempted to update the email address to my new address, succeeded, then was told I had an existing DB link on my desktop and whether I wanted to rename to a different link name or overwrite (something to that effect). I clicked rename instead of getting a new link by mistake, and the next thing I new was that there were no file folders in my DB account. I assumed I had managed to open a new account under my new email address and had overwritten my old account/link with the new, empty (no folders) link/account. I'm somewhat confused as to what happened in that transaction. I am hoping that there should still be an account for me under the old email address with my folders. If the old account and folders still exist, the folders need to be put into the new account with the new email address.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for the update, PC72.

I'm still not sure about what exactly happened though, because when you change your account's email address, your account doesn't get overwritten; only the address changes.

Also, when you signed in to the Dropbox desktop app with your second address, you were told that the computer was already linked to another Dropbox account.

You chose to rename your existing Dropbox folder; that means that your existing Dropbox folder should be renamed to "Dropbox (old)". This is the process the app follows when a new account gets linked to a computer.

Have you searched your computer, to see if you can find such a folder?
