We're switching Dropbox accounts. How can we transfer all files to the new account?

Our office will be switching Dropbox accounts. So far, we have been part of another party’s Dropbox account, and that account will be closed. We are planning to subscribe to a Dropbox Team account for our own office. How can we permanently transfer the files to the new account that we will create? And when the old Dropbox account is deleted, will the files still remain in our office’s Dropbox account?

Hi from me as well, nana61.

    Basically, the process is:

Create a new shared folder > Copy/move files into the new shared folder > Join folder from new Dropbox account > Transfer ownership of the folder to the new Dropbox account

The last two steps (joining the folder and transferring the ownership) can also be followed the other way around, meaning:

Create a new shared folder > Copy/move files into the new shared folder > Transfer ownership of the folder to the new Dropbox account > Join folder from new Dropbox account

    I hope this helps!

So, should we create a shared folder first or transfer ownership first?

Because in your explanation, you said to create a shared folder, then transfer ownership, and then create another shared folder again.

    Please clarify the explanation clearly.

Perfect, thanks for clarifying that! Since we’re talking about two Dropbox team accounts, I suggest following the steps in this Help Center article (this is basically what Walter mentioned, as well).

To sum up the process, you’ll need to create a shared folder and move/copy all of your files/folders within that folder and share it with the new Dropbox account (if you have team folders that can't be moved within another folder, you can try to open them instead and copy/move their contents to the shared folder). Another option is to directly share each one of your folders with the new Dropbox account.

One important step, that Walter also mentioned, is to transfer the ownership of your folder(s) to the new Dropbox account, so that you don’t face any issues once the old Dropbox account is deleted. You can do this this way.

After that, you can log in to your new Dropbox account and follow these steps. Once the process is complete, you can move your files out of the shared folder you had created and organize them on your new Dropbox account.

Hope this helps a bit. Let me know, if you need something else though.

The account we are currently using is part of another Dropbox team (Dropbox Standard). However, our office would like to create our own Dropbox account, so that we are no longer associated with that other party, as their Dropbox account will be closed.

Could you please provide a complete and detailed step by step guide on how to transfer the files so that our files remain permanently available even after the old account is deleted?

Because if the explanation only mentions using shared folders, there arr too many directions and options, and we are unsure which method to use and which one would be appropriate. Thank you.

Hey nana61! To clarify a bit more, is the current Dropbox account that you’re using a personal one (Dropbox Plus/Professional), or is it part of another Dropbox team?

I’ll be able to further guide you this way.

Can you please inform us how to do it in detail, including the step-by-step process, and how to ensure that all data is transferred from the old account?

Hey nana61 - thanks for using Dropbox and posting on our Community!

The best way to achieve this would be through a shared folder. Just make sure to put all the data from the account you'll be dropping and transfer the shared folder's ownership to the new account.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
