How to move a large folder from a Basic account to a Plus one?

Device
Desktop Mac
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Mac OS26.2
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
239.4.8301

I need to move a large folder (250GB) from a Basic Dropbox account to a Plus account that has more storage. How do I do that?

  • Hey pearlphoto, welcome to our Community!

As a first step please take into account what Mark mentioned if your Basic account is over quota

With that being said the best way to go about moving a large folder from your Dropbox Basic account to your Plus account is to use a shared folder.

You can log in to your Basic account (the one with the folder you want to move), and then use these steps to create a shared folder and invite your Plus account to it.

You can read more about this here

Keep in mind that for folders larger than 50 GB, it might be wiser to use the Dropbox desktop or mobile app, as the web upload has a 50 GB limit per file or folder.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know!

Please disregard the above message, I simply hadn't joined the shared folder. When I did that the 250GB folder was in the Plus account! All's well! Thanks again.

Thanks very much Megan! I followed the steps in the links you kindly provided, working from the desktop Dropbox app. It.appeared to be working, but when I opened the Plus account, the folder I was trying to move wasn't there. Apparently the concern Mark mentioned kept the sharing from happening.

I think the solution will be to simply upgrade the Basic account where the 250GB folder currently resides to a Plus account,  move anything I want to keep from the current Plus account into the new one, and then cancel the old Plus account.  Do you see any problems with that approach? As is obvious, I'm new to Dropbox.

Is the folder in the basic one? If so create a shared folder between the two accounts if it will let you. You may find if you are over quota you are limited to only downloading the files locally and reuploading them to the other account.
