I get this error when I click to open the file, or try to join the folder. I don't know why it's in the shared folder since they are my personal photos.

The files within it may be yours, but the folder itself is a shared folder that's not added to your account, and it won't let you add the folder because it's larger than your available space.
Are you sure the files you need were in a shared folder? Have you tried accessing them from the All files page, rather than the Sharing page?
