Can I rename the root folder that Dropbox is in on Windows?

I have moved all my Dropbox files to a new SSD in my computer which is on Drive E.  I found out the hard way to change the location of the Dropbox folder before moving stuff over.  Anyways my question is, is there any way to change the root folder name so my Dropbox location isn't E:\Dropbox\Dropbox?  I'd like to change it to DropboxBox or actually anything else at this point.  When I try to change it I get the message that the folder or a file in it is open in another program.  I have closed everything :(

Hi RaggedyMom, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

You most likely wouldn't be able to rename it directly, since the existing Dropbox folder is linked to its parent folder.

You could try simply creating a new folder on your E:\ with the name you actually want (like E:\DropboxBox), and then move the existing Dropbox folder into that folder.

Once it's complete, you can delete the old E:\Dropbox folder location.

Keep me updated with any progress!

Well I was very excited to try this but it won't work either.  I get the same message that a file in it is open in another program but I have closed all apps.  😕

Aside from the Dropbox desktop application, which needs to be open to move the folder, are you certain that there is nothing else on your machine that is currently running which could have files open in the Dropbox folder?

Could you try rebooting the machine and closing all the apps again, and then try moving the Dropbox folder?

I'm using Windows Explorer to move the folder into E:/DropboxBox from E:/Dropbox, not the Dropbox desktop application.  Should I be using that instead? Is that even possible ?  🤔

I tried rebooting, nothing is open, still no luck.

Yes, you can only move the Dropbox folder from within the Dropbox desktop application, as linked in my earlier post.

Otherwise, this could result in data deletion and other issues if it managed to succeed.

It worked once I realized I needed to do this operation within the Dropbox app.  Thank you so much for your help!! Now there is only ONE Dropbox folder with it's famous Dropbox Icon.
