Nothing gets copied to the clipboard after clicking "Copy link" on Linux.

Application Affected
Dropbox
Device
Dell Inspiron 5482
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Fedora Workstation 43 running Gnome on Wayland.
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
(241.4.4853 - found in app settings or About section)

Question or IssueThe question is about the context menu in Files. When I click on the Dropbox item in the context menu and choose "Copy link" nothing ends up in the clipboard. The only workaround I found is to go the dropbox web interface and copy the link from there.

I installed xclip and xsel but this doesn't solve the problem. I'm running Fedora 43 which no longer has an X11 session. Shouldn't this be treated as a bug and the app updated to work with Wayland since this is the new de facto standard?

  • Hey entodoays - this looks like a Wayland clipboard integration issue. The copy notification showing up but not actually copying to the clipboard is a pretty classic sign of that.

    A couple things to try:

    1. Make sure you have xclip or xsel installed. Open a terminal and run:
    2.    sudo dnf install xclip xsel

    2. If that doesn't work, try switching to X11 instead of Wayland (you can change this at the login screen). Sometimes apps don't play nice with Wayland's clipboard yet.

I unistalled and reinstalled dropbox. The settings were remembered and I didn't have to relink my Dropbox. The bug is still present.

Hey entodoays, let me jump in here!

Can you still try uninstalling and then reinstalling the desktop app?

Even if you currently have 3 devices linked, that shouldn't be a problem. Once you reinstall it will be on one of the devices you're using. If you come across any issues, don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks!

I am on the free Basic plan and have exactly three devices currently linked.

Did you also follow Walter’s suggestion to reinstall the Dropbox app, entodoays

If you didn't, and you'd like to give it a try, please make sure you’re not on the free Basic plan first with more than 3 devices currently linked (otherwise, you may not be able to re-link your desktop app).

This issue has been here for quite a while, but I never bothered to report. After quitting and restarting Dropbox, after clicking the Copy link menu item, I got a notification that the link has been copied and if I click on the notification, I new tab is opened with the link, but it still didn't populate the clipboard.

Hey entodoays - thanks for letting us know about this.

Have you tried rebooting your computer and/or quitting and relaunching the app since you first noticed this?

If you did, you can also try reinstalling.

In any case, please keep us posted!
