The API was designed with the intention that each user would link their own Dropbox account, in order to interact with their own files. However, it is technically possible to connect to just one account. The SDKs don't offer explicit support for it and we don't recommend doing so, for various technical and security reasons. For example, like you mentioned, for client-side apps, any credentials could be extracted. (In this case, you wouldn't embed your Dropbox login credentials (username and password) themselves, but rather an access token. That would still be security issue though.)

I design software that needs to check for updates and other related things, but need a server to do so. I've tried a number of different services that have so far failed to meet my requirements. I do not know anything about building an API for this, so any help will be appreciated. I do not want hackers to be able to use sniffers to determine my login credentials. That's my goal.
