Attention upgraders to Business account! : access to Google docs denied unless upgrade

Explorer | Level 3

Attention all people who want to upgrade from a Free, Plus or Pro account to a business account !

I upgraded from Pro to Business on trial basis, and found out the hard way that suddenly all the Google documents that I had created in the Pro account were no longer accessible. I was given a page telling me that I needed to upgrade to a (paid) Gsuite account if I want to be able to access my documents again.

I completely disagree with this policy, which is not clearly mentioned anywhere when doing the upgrade to Business.

Hello there @Stijn B.

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with this, could you elaborate a tad on this though so as to make sure we're on the same page?

Screenshots of any error(s) you might be getting might also help so feel free to send those along too.

Thanks!

Hello Walter,

It's really quite simple : I upped my Pro account to a Business account, and appearently that implies that from that moment on the integration with Gsuite and MS Office 365, which is free with the Pro plan, becomes paid.

As I had created both Gsuite and Office documents with my free integration in the Pro plan, I can now no longer access these documents. To access them again, I would need to buy a commercial Gsuite account (minimum 6 euro per month + I'd need to register a domain on my name as Gsuite commercial requires that, so say 10 euro extra per year), and also buy a commercial Office 365 licence! Pardon my French but this is a complete rip-off.

I can't comment on the Google integration, but with Office that's actually a limitation imposed by Microsoft, not Dropbox, and it is documented.

Do I need a special license to edit my Dropbox files in an Office Online application?

If you have a Dropbox Basic or Plus account, you will not need a Microsoft account or Office license to edit your files.

If you have a Dropbox Business account, you will need an enterprise Microsoft account with a license that allows editing in Office Online (Business, Business Premium, ProPlus, E3, E4, or E5).

Additionally, if you're using a tablet larger than 10", Microsoft requires that you have an O365 license to use Office applications.

Hello Rich,

Thanks for the link. Indeed it is also the case for Office365. Dropbox needs to put this as a warning in capital letters on the first screen when upgrading to Business, not just in the section about integrations in my opinion, as it has a blocking effect on all documents.

I'm still deliberating on what to do now. The best option will probably be to go back to Pro plan, but this as implications for the organization I'm a part of, as we intended to use the team functionality of Business for our projects and I'd already set the whole thing up with them. A lot of work will be lost now, just to be able to get my documents back.

I've been a loyal user and I might even say a big fan of Dropbox over the years, but this is one major disappointment.
