Changing email address associated with DB account

Helpful | Level 5

If I change the email address associated with my account, what will change? I've seen this post, which says that nothing will except for my login info and my notification email address. However, what about folders that have been shared with me (under my old email address) and folders I've shared with other (under my old email address)?

I'm a little confused about how email addresses are managed, since if I receive a folder invite to <new email address>, and click (in gmail) the link that says "open folder", I get the following message: "<new email> was given access, but you’re signed in as <old email>." (Note that both emails are forwarded to my <new email> gmail account.) But then I'm allowed to accept the share. So how does Dropbox know that <new email> and <old email> are both mine? Or does it not care, reasoning that if I'm signed in to my email as <new email>, and into DB as <old email> and received an invite to <new email>, I've sufficiently verified my identity? (That doesn't seem particularly secure, since it relies on my email not getting hacked.)

Super User
Regarding sharing, it's all good. People share with your email, but it's linked to your account. If you change your email, you will still be a part of all shared folders you're a part of. However, since the old email would no longer be associated with your account, if people then attempt to share with your old email, it will fail, since it won't know which account to share it to.

On the matter of invite emails, I can't tell you exactly, since I don't know what's going on with that. Sorry.

I asked DB support about the sharing issue with multiple email addresses, and here is their response:

Dropbox does not know, that one is your old and one is your new email address. Dropbox knows, that you have a Dropbox account with the email address <old> (because you are logged in or connected on the device), although you received and try access through another one.

When you try to access a shared folder with another email address than the invited one, you send a request to the sender and he has allow to it. Otherwise you can not access the shared folder.

I have had a Dropbox account asscoiated with my yahoo email address for a number of years.  I noticed that my accounts were no longer synching a few weeks ago.  One of my computers said that I need to change my password and I did that.  However, I also noticed that somehow Dropbox changed the email asscociated with all my computer's accounts to my Outlook.com associated with my Microsoft 365 without my knowledge or permission.  Is this another cockup by Microsoft taking over my computer and making changes without my knowledge or permission?  It seems as if each time Miscrosoft does these things it created a multitiude of problems that become very very difficult to clean up.  Can I just go back to my old yahoo address and not use this nonsensical Outlook address and Microsoft taking over my computer????

Hey @Glenzo, welcome to our community!

First of all, we can not, and would not, change your email address. Any Dropbox account modification like this can only be done by you, the subscriber.

That said, you can change your email address from your account’s settings online, like this:
  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click the avatar at the top of any page.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Under the General tab, find your email address.
  5. Click Edit.
  6. Enter your new email address, current email address, and password.
  7. Click Update email.
If you don't see the Edit option, it's likely that you haven't verified your email address. If this is the case, click Verify email to change the email address on your Dropbox account.

Once you change your email address, you'll use the new email address to log in to Dropbox, and all Dropbox-related emails will be sent to the new address.

I hope this helps. Let me know.
Thanks!
