How to re-establish my access to files after deleting my account

Explorer | Level 4

Hi all,

I deleted my Dropbox account which had an extinct email address (my former internet provider email) in order to associate my Dropbox account with my new email account (I didn't relaize there was an easier way to do that).  While I was doing that someone who shares the dropbox with me who was the owner made me the owner of the folders.   So that made the folders without an owner since he is no longer the owner and my account which had the ownership was deleted.    Dropbox support asked if I could reactivate my old email account so I could work with them in a secure fashion.  I called my former internet provider and they said no way, the email account is long gone.  They could not work with the original owner either since he had made me the sole owner.

We have set up new folders in thge mean time but I want to make sure the old folders are deleted.  If there is no activity after so many months will it automatically delete the folders?  If not does anyone have any ideas on how I can get the old folders deleted?

Thanks.

Hey @BDUser125, I appreciate the detailed description!

While I can’t access any account-related details via this channel for security reasons, I’ll form my reply on your description & the latest update you’ve received through your email provider.

If you’ve deleted your Dropbox account yourself, any files located in your shared folders are still available to other members of the share, even if these don’t have an Owner. To my mind, you’d have to contact any of the current members if you’d like to permanently delete any files/content you’d wish to remove.

That being said, if your Dropbox account has been idle for some time & your email address provider can’t re-establish your access, then it will be deactivated—and your files deleted—90 days after you reach 12 months of inactivity. Even so, this only applies to personal content.

I hope that this clarifies matters for you to a certain extent & please feel free to touch-base with me here should you have any follow-up inquiries or thoughts. Thanks!
