Why am I getting the error "Your Dropbox is Full" when uploading to a shared folder?

I am uploading files to a client's dropbox but received a message that my dropbox is full and I'd need to upgrade. This happened when I downgraded my  account. Why do I get this error when I am uploading to someone else's dropbox?
