Why does my quota not add up correctly?

New member | Level 2

Hi!

My dropbox shows 29.98 GB.

How is this possible? Summing all of my "Space earned" fields should be 30GB?

Thanks!

Hey @Orlin N. - welcome to our Community!

That sounds interesting! Since I'd really like to have a better look into this I have already sent you an email and we can continue from there as this would require account specific information - if that's OK with you as well!

Hopefully we'll get this resolved together!

Hi Orlin,

My best guess would be that you have some "earned space" in megabytes. Computers count different than humans, because of that 1 GB is actually 1024 MB. Let's say you have 4 bonusses of 250 MB that means you get 1000 MB for free. Since 1 GB is 1024 MB, we can calculate:

1000/1024 = 0.98

So 1000 MB free space means 0.98 GB free space.

Cheers,

Simon

Yes, I have earned space in MB (as you can see in my mail),

but when you add two friends you have 1GB space earned (2x500GB), not 1000MB

Actually when you get two referral bonuses it is 500 MB+ 500 MB = 1000 MB or approximately 1 GB hence the discrepancy you observed.

Dropbox Basic accounts will earn 500 MB of space for each friend they refer to Dropbox while  Dropbox Plus or Professional accounts, would earn 1 GB of space for each referral.

All in all, Dropbox Basic accounts can earn up to 16 GB through referrals. Dropbox Plus and Professional accounts can earn up to 32 GB.

I hope this helps clear this up.

OK, but when I add 2 friends I earn 1GB in space, not 1000MB, right?

and if I add 32 friends I will earn 16GB, not 16 000MB

Then why I have 29.98GB???

As far as I can tell you get 500 MB per added friend, so that would mean 1000 MB for 2 added friends, so 0.98 GB for 2 added friends.

It's perfectly clear that 2x500MB = 1000MB, which is about 0.98GB.

Then why a colleague of mine, sitting right next to me has 6GB space? slightly smiling face

If this was the way it's counted, he should have 2GB from the beginning and (8x500MB) 3,92GB from referrals, total 5,92?

Sorry, I've met quite some people that had problems with the concept of 1024 MB = 1 GB.

In my own dropbox there are a few bonuses of 250 MB, 125 MB en 500 MB, amounting in total to 1750 MB. My total space ends in .75 GB so for me it also looks like the MB bonuses are counted with 1000 MB = 1GB. I have no idea what the cause of your .98 is.
