Autostart On Windows Startup

Autostart On Windows Startup

Hello everyone.
I have been using Dropbox for a long time and sadly, I can not use the app on my computers at all. I figured after the years have gone by I would try once again but still the same situation. I have tried every setting I can find and STILL Dropbox insists on auto ignoring the auto start when windows starts feature when I uncheck the box. I have got in the system registry and altered settings and it works for a short bit and suddenly them altered registry settings are mysteriously changed back and off we go! We are now back to auto running every time I restart windows or come back from lock screen. I won't even mention what I feel like doing when I have to insert a memory card into my laptop after I have told it MANY times I do not with to auto import files to Dropbox. It makes me sick to my guts to mention the big G companies name at all but I do not have this issue with them at all. Is there ANY fixes, hot fixes, tweaks or anything that will allow me to continue to use Dropbox and stay away from the big G company? I don't care about the 3 sync PC thing. it's not even worth bringing up.  On a side note, back in my day, we called a program that altered settings back to what IT wanted not what we wanted MALWARE. Not accusing, just outright frustrated. So for now, I guess I will once again uninstall and have to go to the dang website every time I need to use Dropbox.

Thanks for any info. Have a great day everyone.

Hey @DjPorkchop, thanks for posting here!

I would like for you to locate your Dropbox icon on your task bar, next to your WiFi and hover your mouse there. Can you do this, and let me know the version of the app you're seeing there?

If you have any screenshots from the app's preferences and settings as you've set them up, that'd be amazing.

Keep me posted, and we'll take it from there!

Hi.

Thanks for the reply. I have start up on windows off as indicated in the screenshot, all auto starts on removable drives are set to ask every time on Windows 10, and auto sync is set to none right now, I chose not to show that part as it does contain my wife and daughters names and they are not a part of this conversation as we speak. If needs be I can share that section privately. As far as my registry tweaks I went through and made to stop Dropbox for intruding in on me when I told it not to, well it took it upon it self a couple days ago to go back and alter all them registry settings for me and revert them back. So they are default as from the download so there really is no point in taking screenshots of a dozen or so registry entries. I appreciate your time.db_1.jpgdb2.jpgdb3.jpg

Thanks for your screenshots and additional info, @DjPorkchop.

Have you tried uninstalling the Dropbox app, restarting your computer and then reinstalling it, to see if that makes any difference in the behavior of the app?

Hi.

Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. I have been installing and uninstalling for years to see if Dropbox has ever fixed the issue and it never has been. A quick search around the net will reveal thousands and thousands of others who have given up on even coming here to ask and have looked elsewhere. The answers and fixes never come. A program / app should never reset settings a user sets plain and simple even with updates. It simply should never happen. *DISCLAIMER* I am not saying the app is a virus of malware as others on other sites claim, however by definition ..... if it looks like a pig and smells like a pig it must be a pig right? I am not sure why it resets the settings. After I posted the screenshots here I went back yet AGAIN and altered my system registry (rubbed it's nose in it so to speak) and FORCED it to never run unless I tell it to and low and behold, I get on this morning and tah dah!!! Auto start on windows startup. My registry settings were reverted back as soon as I hit my power on button. This simply should not ever happen. It is one thing to alter a apps settings I guess but not a person system registry. I really hope we can figure a hot fix or a real fix out for this one. It is not so easy to move on to the big G Drive. My wife and Daughter use Dropbox and they are not moving on so I am essentially stuck.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Thanks for the update here.

We appreciate your feedback about this, but there's clearly something wrong here, as this is not expected behavior.

Have you tried the more advanced reinstall of the app maybe?

Let me know how that goes and we'll go from there.

Hello again and thanks for the reply.

No, I have not taken that route yet. That sure is along way around a simple application install to get it to work right but if it works, I'm willing to give it a try for sure. As mentioned though, this is not new. I have been using Dropbox for ages now and this has been a on going battle for a very long time across multiple computers. I gave up on the app long ago and resorted to using the browser if I ever had to use Dropbox while on PC. Now I should mention I have never had any issues ever on a mobile device using Dropbox.

I am going to go give that  try real quick. Ill be back and let you all know how it goes. Thanks again.
