I have seen the threads regarding the issue with backup and using migration assistant (Mac). I am having similar issues with my new computer.
Dropbox will not create a separate backup for my new computer. *folders not in default location.
Instead it seems to have joined my new computer to my old computer backup, mirroring the desktops of both under the "old" backup.
Since my airbook backup cannot be deleted , and I use the new pro for work, I am wondering if this issue can be fixed at all?
My concern is that if anything goes wrong with my airbook [the "old" computer I migrated to the Pro from] that the new pro will no longer backup.
I have tried all suggestions in the threads I have found, unlinking and relinking, deleted dropbox and reinstalled, changed security preferences and accessibility not a single thing has worked to separate the new computer and create a backup of its own. I just keep receiving the same error *folders not in default location
Any suggestions? I am just hoping nothing goes wrong until I can get this resolved.
Thanks
Hey @ChloeW, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Would you mind sending over a few screenshots, so we can have a visual of the situation you described?
Also, what is the sync status of the Dropbox application on your computer?
You can see that by hovering over the Dropbox icon in your menu bar with your mouse.
Thanks!

Hi thanks for responding
So here is a screen shot showing dropbox synching, this is taken from the NEW computer, however it is synching to my OLD computers [airbook] backup and I receive the default folder location error when I attempt to create a separate backup for the new computer.
The two files showing [not blacked out]
"will this synch" is a folder I created on new computer desktop and then it appeared on the desktop of both the new and old computer as well as Dropbox. Cool I admit but why is Dropbox backing up to the old computer backup named airbook rather than creating a new one for this computer?
Why will dropbox not recognize this new computer as a separate device? In addition to my airbook I have a computer from 2013 backed up and Dropbox is fine with it this issue did not happen when moving from the 2013 computer to the airbook. I will say I did not use the migration utility when I did this last time a few years ago. I did this time, going from my airbook to the 2022 Pro.
The file marked "That did not work" was created after I tried the suggestion of unlinking the computer and then relinking it...obviously that did not work as the situation remains.
Dropbox thinks this new Macpro is in fact my old Airbook. I cannot delete the airbook backup because that computer is still in use.
I am worried, since I will not be able to back this computer up as a stand alone device because the issue *Not in default location remains.
Meaning no airbook backup no pro backup [since they are currently one and the same] idk what to do here. Suggestions?
Thank you

Hi @ChloeW, in general, migration assistants can affect Dropbox on the new machine due to previous locations, computer usernames, and other permissions being inherited from the old machine.
Could you check if there are one or two backups visible on the Dropbox site?
