Apps and Installations
Have a question about a Dropbox app or installation? Reach out to the Dropbox Community and get solutions, help, and advice from members.
For those who are still frustrated and unable to find a solution, I have found one. The wild part? It wasn't that difficult.
The responses received from Dropbox peeps was the following:
"Hi @Csansom001, most likely you have a recent Mac running on the M1 Silicon chip, which is ARM-based.
Currently, the Dropbox desktop application for Windows cannot run on an ARM chip, and only the S Mode version of the app can be installed."
That was the end of the help lol. No alternative solutions, just sheit out of luck. See below for solution/workaround that worked for me:
1. Download Dropbox on the Mac side, NOT on parallels.
2. Uninstall Dropbox S on the parallels side, if you have it installed.
3. On the Mac side, make your files available offline within the settings of Dropbox, again on the Mac side NOT parallels.
4. On Parallels side, open file explorer and find your folder that contains your files on Dropbox on the Mac side. Pin this folder on the parallels file explorer. Now you can effectively access Dropbox files on the parallels side without downloading Dropbox on the parallels side. Well, what about syncing files? Your files are synced on the Mac side. So edits flow through the parallels side and then are synced to Dropbox on the Mac side.
As another alternative - we mainly have parallels for our company so we can use Excel and all its shortcuts. Recently, Accelerator Keys addon for Mac updated their software so there is no longer a lag when using the shortcuts on Mac side Excel. So really, we may end up just scrapping Parallels and going full Mac. Anyway, food for thought and am happy to answer any questions on the above workaround.
the best solution is to move to other cloud. It is a pity because Dropbox is working very well and I have an yearly subscription.
Megacloud is working like a charm on Xiaomi S Book 12.4 with Snapdragon ARM gen 2
(and they have clients for win11, linux,etc.etc.)
It would be great if you could develop a desktop version app of Dropbox that is compatible with the ARM architecture. I am currently running Windows 11 Pro on an Apple Macbook M1 and I need Dropbox Desktop on Windows for compatibility reasons within a bigger team and I've run into a dead stop since I found out that there is so version of Dropbox Desktop compatible with an ARM processor.
I found a few forums where this is discussed, so there are many other people who would also appreciate this development.
I've been a Dropbox user for a very very long time. Recently I've purchased an X13s Thinkpad with an ARM processor and I've had no major issues using it as well as regarding compatibility of software I need (I'm a Data Scientist and work with IT in general, phpAdmin, DBeaver, VS Code,etc..) obviously the more demanding software I run either on the servers on my local desktop and the X13s was for scripting and daily interactions, e-mails, spreadsheets and the occasional coding here and there (no real compiling).
I use Dropbox to synch between every machine I use to have my files readily available but to my surprise Dropbox can't use the native emulation from Win11 where other softwares that are a lot less know or used are compatible.
Dropbox should invest some time in supporting ARM chips otherwise they will be left behind and I'll have to begin to search for another cloud service...
A true pitty that this is still unavailable and hopefully by the time my subscription expires they have a solution because using the "S Mode" is less that ideal and completely messes up my workflow.
I have a temporary solution where I have Dropbox access to my local server (home-lab) where I access the dropbox folder in the server as opposed to via the internet directly to the X13s. But this setup is still sub-optimal because I regularly use VPN tunnels which hinder my access to my local server, so I need to disconnect from the VPN when trying to access dropbox files in the server.
Dropbox, you are a multi-million dollar corporation, please invest in at least making Win 11 emulation work, it doesn't need to be a native ARM application.

But on this topic... We've been waiting for over 7 years! In the meantime I've changed the location of my Dropbox folder into Onedrive and sooner or later I'll synchronize the files I need on my android devices and leave Dropbox for good.
On my ARM devices, like Raspberry Pi. In the worst cases I'm using FTP and in the Ubuntu images I'm relying on Google Drive or pCloud.
