desktop path on mac now goes through Dropbox. How do I go back to direct access (e.g. eliminate the path through dropbox without losing  the files?

You enabled the computer backup feature, which MOVES key folders such as Desktop, Documents, etc., into your Dropbox folder. Refer to the following help article:
