Dropbox Desktop will not install, run, or uninstall.

Dropbox Desktop will not install, run, or uninstall.

I regularly use Dropbox on my Windows 10 PC, but today I realized that Dropbox was not running in the system tray. Dropbox was not running or syncing, so I decided to try and run it, nothing happens after I click the Dropbox application. So:

-Restarted my PC to see if Dropbox would run afterwards, did not work.

-I tried to uninstall Dropbox, it says uninstall failed. Like WHAT? So I decided to delete all the Dropbox installation folders manually, and deleted the Dropbox registry stuff as well. There was some stupid DropboxExt64.51.0.dll file that refused to be deleted because Windows says that its running or whatever, even in safe mode, and it did not show up in task manager. So I force deleted this file with Command Prompt while ensuring that Windows Explorer was disabled for a short time.

-I tried to re-install Dropbox before and after removing all the stuff, however no matter what I do I keep getting error message "Installation failed with an unknown error (Error code: -1073741795). See the link below for instructions to perform an advanced reinstall." I  tried the advanced reinstall, nothing works. I tried both the online and offline installers.

-I tried running installer as Administrator, did not work.

-I tried running the installer as different compatibility, did not work.

Nothing works and this really upsetting me. No one else on the planet has this issue. Please, if anyone could assist.

Hi @Searson, thanks for posting to our Community!

Do you have any antivirus/firewall or VPN running on your computer which could be preventing you from downloading the Dropbox app?

If yes, you could temporarily disable them before installing Dropbox on your device.

You could also try creating another user profile on your computer and download the app there instead.

Let me know in case any of that helps!

I disabled anti-virus and I still got the same error.
I also created another user and tried installing Dropbox there, and I got the same error.

Hey @Searson, I hope you're doing well!

Have you also tried to install the app using the offline installer

Can you give this a try?

Yes, I have tried to install Dropbox using the offline installer and I still got the error.
I even tried to install older offline versions as well, and I still got this issue.

Thanks for your rapid response, @Searson!

Would you mind sharing a screenshot of the error you received on your end with me?

I have the same issue, I tried all of them also. I lost so many hours with that issue.

I gave up on Dropbox and I moved on to using MEGA cloud storage instead. It's not better but it gives far more storage.
Problems I have with MEGA (ON MOBILE) is:
-cant save text files without the file itself closing

-offline files dont sync

-offline files sections shows all the folders and not just the offline file itself
-can't see anything at all without internet connection

Makes me realize how much better Dropbox is compared to other cloud storage, the only problem is that Dropbox does not work on my PC anymore, and the storage space is so small.

I just found the solution ! I copied Dropbox folder(in the program files) from my other PC and run DropboxUninstaller.exe That's it !

I could install it finally.

I tried everything. I even tried what you just did, all failed. I am still getting this error when trying to install. This will never be fixed, but thank you. dropbox install error.JPG
