I lost my whole desktop when I uninstalled the Dropbox app, any help?

When I finished installing Dropbox he welcomed me and gave me the option to create a backup copy of my computer, I accepted. After using Dropbox for a while I decided to uninstall it, when I moved the application to the trash and gave it to empty my entire desktop, downloads and documents disappeared. It seems that Dropbox took them away when uninstalling it.
I hope you can help me, Thank you.

Thanks for posting @IlanCG, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with this!

 

Can you please check in your local Dropbox folder for a folder called "My Mac", and see if the files you're looking for are located there?

 

Uninstalling the app wouldn't delete the local folder, this would need to be done separately so the folder should still be locally on your computer.

 

If you don't see the "My Mac" folder, please make sure that you have the option to show hidden files enabled.

 

Otherwise, you can look in your account online for this folder too.

Hi, 

 

I lost all my desktop me too. 

In fact, i uninstall dropbox, then, i delete the file of my desktop on the Dropbox location but my desktop is not the same. 

I lost my desktop configuration and all the files. 

How could i do to have them again ?

Hi @Poppies, could you try the steps my colleague suggested to locate the Dropbox folder on your machine, or to check the recycle bin on your device?

 

It might also be possible to recover the files from the local machine using a third party app or service to do so.

I have a similar problem. I deleted the Dropbox file from my desktop. What I cant understand is why ALL my files dissapeared! I could understand that the files that where saved in my dropbox could dissapear, but the ones that weren´t saved in dropbox due to a lack of space? How can ALL my files dissapear? Help please! How can I recover my files?

Hi there @Viviancinha, thanks for checking in with us. 

If you deleted the Dropbox folder while the desktop app was running and syncing, then the app read that as a deletion. 

Since the Dropbox folder contains all your files, it removed all its content from your computer and the website as a result. 

Can you try recovering them by following these steps

@Lusil thanks for your answer. What I need is to recover ALL my files. Seems that this is a problem that happens usually in Dropbox? I have a Basic account. Not for that reason I must accept that all my files are gone. What I see is that I have to pay to get my files recovered? Even if its a problem due to Dropbox? I am talking by email with the support team, who  ir trying to help me, but at the moment I still dont have my files and its gonna be one month from these event. I am really worried and loosing my confidence in Dropbox as a tool. 

I hope really somebody can help me. I can´t believe I lost all my files just because I deleted Dropbox...

Also had 2 big data losses with dropbox over the time 
In the end, the support ignored me. 

 

Always make backup when using Dropbox. One buggy update and all your files could be gone.
