Scrivener backup files cannot be previewed

I have been using the Scrivener writing program for years. I have always saved/backed up  to Dropbox for security. All of a sudden my backups cannot be previewed.

You didn't offer any specifics as to what tools you're currently using to accomplish your task, such as; operating system or what type of device (eg: computer, phone or tablet).

Have you tried downloading the file(s) to your device to view it?  If not, you should do so because there are limitations for previewing files.

I'm listing the Help Center articles below for your convenience in case you couldn't find them.  This way you can read them at your leisure.

• What types of files can I preview on Dropbox?  This shows you the types of files that can be previewed from the website (including any file limitations).  Be aware that if the files are password protected then you won't be allowed to preview them.

Were you able to open the files? I am Using Scrivener on my IPad Air 2 and when I go into Dropbox it won’t let me open to view.

Any help on this will be gratefully received

Is the file extension a supported one as per https://www.dropbox.com/help/files-folders/file-types-that-preview ?

If its .scriv then its a none supported file type so wont preview I'm afraid.

I know I can’t preview it. I need to know what do I have to do to ensure I can preview. Are you saying Scrivener is not compatible with Dropbox.

I am writing on Scrivener and need to able to access my work - what do I do ?

Open the file in Scrivener.

Dropbox cannot preview all filetypes. For those it cannot preview, you need to open the file in an application that supports that particular filetype.

I’m very new to this so sorry if appear dense ... talk me through it pls.

I got as far as ‘open in’ but which app do I choose ? It is a novel I am writing and there is a lot of work there.

Hi @Jsd,

The app you are going to choose depends on the file you want to open. For example, if it is a video file, you need to open it in a video player etc.

There is not a specific path that needs to be followed but according to the file, you will choose the appropriate app. Also, some files like .pdfs for example, open in multiple applications, so you can choose the one you want.
