Hi,

I have shared a Dropbox file successfully and the other person can see it, but now I can't see it? Help please. Thanks.

Hi @Jack299, welcome to our Community!

Could you give me some additional info, in order for me to have a full visual of this?

Where are you searching for the file? Is it online, on the mobile app or the desktop app?

Also, how exactly did you share the file? Did you use a shared link, shared the file directly, file transfer, or a different way? Feel free to also check your deleted files page, and let me know what you see there.

Let me know more!

Hi Megan,

Thanks for your assistance.

I am searching for my file online and also in my flies on my computers (2).

I shared the link with the other person (my accountant). Put in their email address under the sharing system in Dropbox and sent the invitation to the person.

There are no delete files in my Deleted folder.

Thanks again,

Jack

Hi Megan,

Is it possible for the person who the file is shared with to download the file and remove it from Dropbox?

Thanks

Hi @Jack299, that depends on how you shared the file.

If you allowed them to edit the content, then there's a possibility.

Could you also check your events page? The Events page at www.dropbox.com/events gives you an overview of all activity in your account including files events (adds/edits/deletes), as well as adding or removing shared folders and files.

Hey @Jack299, sorry to jump in here.

Even if this person has edit access on the folder, they may delete the contents, but not the folder itself and since you're the owner, if there were any deletions, you'd be able to restore the files.

Do you perhaps see this folder in your "shared" tab?

Hi Hannah,

Thanks for your contribution and advice.

No I can't see the folder, where the contents were placed, at all, but the person I shared it with says it is all there??? The main folder which contains all my accounting stuff is still there though with a previous years info but not the 2021-22 folder in question.

Regards,

Jack.

Something which might have some bearing is I recently placed more accounting info into Dropbox and one of the files had the same name as the one that has gone missing.

Could this be the reason I can no longer see the original file?

Thinking this may have some bearing I have tried to delete the 2021-22 file from the new files saved on Dropbox to see if the old ones come back but no nothing. Still my accountant, with show I shared the file, can still see the original file!!! Confusing and frustrating.

The two files were under different folders in my dropbox and I thought this should be ok?

Thanks,

Jack.

Hi @Jack299, just for clarification, are you certain that you shared a folder with them directly, or did you create a shared link to the folder?

These are two different systems for sharing, and both vary in how you and the other user access them.
