Dropbox Paper 2020 Release Communication Fail

As a longtime user (almost 12 years now), and paying pro subscriber, I feel like longtime accounts like mine should have been some of the first to get the new 2020 release. Now, considering it is nearing 2021, I am just hoping to see some update before the end of the year still, probably as one of the last users to see the update.

My main reason for posting here is to express my disappointment in how Dropbox is communicating this release to its longtime users. We heard all the grand plans when it was announced, and when the first users started seeing in on their accounts, but now we have been completely ghosted. I have been holding off committing to Notion in hopes a better Dropbox Paper would fit my needs, but without even an estimate of when I might see it, I might have to go the other direction next year by going all-in on Notion and write off DB Paper completely.

PLEASE update us on when Paper 2020 will be released to all!  If not just my account 🙂

I feel the same as you are. I'm still on the new version and it really feels like Dropbox is ghosting us at this point.

The new release keeps the Paper docs within your dropbox folder structure instead of the original separate Paper area (large doc silo with horrible structure). Based on this Help Article, within your Dropbox files, you should see a new option in the "Create new file" dropdown for Paper docs, so you can store and organize them along with all your other files in Dropbox.

For you. That is what I see. The Paper files side by side with the other Dropbox files. So weird that you have the prior version.

Have you tried opening a support incident? Are you in a business setup where the Admin setup might affect the version you see? If not. Have you tried downloading the local desktop version of Dropbox App? This might prompt the change for you allowing Paper to coexist with the rest of your Dropbox files.

I did not know the ‘old’ version was still available. It seems counterintuitive that it is given what Dropbox is saying and sharing.

Official word from Dropbox:

Our engineering team is currently in the process of working on this new feature in order to build the best Paper experience for all our users.
Unfortunately we do not have an exact date, but we will be sure to keep you updated!

So it seems rather unlikely that this will happen in 2020... here's to Paper 2021, I guess?

On a related note, Dropbox has pushed back the removal of the old Paper API to Q2 2021... so it may still be a while.

I completely agree. I have a Dropbox business account with an organization I volunteer for and the new Dropbox Paper release works beautifully because we can store paper docs anywhere in our Dropbox directory. For my day job, our Dropbox business account is on the old Paper version and users can't find paper files because it's completely separate from our team folder structure. It makes Paper useless to us. I suggest adding an Enroll option for the 2020 Paper release at Admin Console > Settings > Early access.

I’m a long time paying dropbox user and still have the old Paper.

I have questioned sometime to Dropbox customer care asking an ETA but they say that I will be soon upgraded to paper 2020.

Now we are in June 2021 and nothing happened yet.

If I add the actual lack of an M1 Dropbox version for my Mac then I’m seriously thinking to look elsewhere for my synced file repository.
