Files moved after creating new file

Files moved after creating new file

When I create a new file from Notepad++ and save it  under c:\Users\admin\documents it gets saved to a subfolder 2023-01. Then when I reopen Notepad++ and attempt to reopen the same file from c:\Users\admin\documents the app reports the file doesn't exist.

Is it Windows 10 or Dropbox that is creating the file in the subfolder? This happens regardless of what app I am using to create the file. Even if I open a CMD window in the directory c:\Users\admin\documents and enter: type null > files.txt, the files.txt gets created and moved to the subfolder.

Can you explain what is happening and tell me if this action can be prevented? Is there a good reason I should not disable this action? My c:\Users\admin\documents folder now has a sub-folder for every month in 2022 starting in 2022-07 and going through 2023-01.

Thanks,

Brian

Hey @btremaine, sorry to hear you're having issues with this.

Are you maybe using the Dropbox Backup feature which moves your Desktop, Downloads and Documents folder in Dropbox?

Let us know and we'll take it from there, Brian.

Hi @Walter ,

I think I do have Dropbox backup enabled on some folders. If I use the web browser to go to my Dropbox account it shows back-ups as 'PC". If I click on 'PC' it shows 'desktop', 'documents', and 'pictures'. The 'documents' entry has a comment 'Automated'. Can I disable this and then reorganize my folders manually?  Could I then enable backup on 'documents' but leave Automated off?

I must say I'm a little confused about Dropbox Backup, versus just selecting a folder or sub-folders to be synced up to the drop box cloud.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi @btremaine, is it possible you enabled automation on that folder? Are you able to disable it using the steps in the article I linked earlier?
