I have created an account with my appleid. How does someone share folders with me in this case?
Hey @GregTheGrate, thanks for posting your question today!
Can the person that wants to share a folder with you, send you a "can edit" link to the folder, to see if that works?
Let me know how it goes.

Yes that person can see a "can edit" but when the link is shared, the user cannot see the files.
However, I think I have discovered the problem. Sharing with someone who is logged on to Dropbox with an AppleId requires that you send the share link to the AppleId email address, not the person's email address. In local testing this seems to work.
Will post again if remote doesn't give the same result. However, I expect that using AppleId email address has solved my problem
Awesome news @GregTheGrate!
I tested it on my end, and this is indeed how it works. If you need anything else, give us a shout.
