Uploading in the background on your Android 7.0 device

Re: Can't upload in the background on Android" still no solution ?

Hey @Angelo T.4 - how are you today?

I hope you had the chance to see the update I provided you with via email; if you didn't , please check your inbox at your earliest convenience.

As for the battery optimization, this is something out of our control Angelo as Battery optimization is a setting that helps conserve battery power and is usually turned on by default on Android devices. While I cannot help with how you'd like to tamper with these settings, I can tell you where to find them. You can find these settings if you go to your system settings>device maintenance>battery.

I hope this helps Angelo!

I was continuing to have problems with DropBox v 98.2.2 not uploading in the background on Android 8.0 (Oreo) on a Galaxy S8.

It turns out that somewhere along the way I had set DropBox to "Always Sleeping App".  D'oh!
I probably grew tired of the continual upload notifications.

Here is how to check and disable it:

Settings->Device Maintenance->Battery->Always Sleeping Apps

If DropBox shows up then press and hold and then delete it from the list.

Waiting to upload Samsung Note 8

The latest version of Dropbox seems to have caused major issues with my Samsung Note 8 with 'Waiting to upload errors'. Have deleted and reinstalled Dropbox. It seems that unless I am watching it upload photos it will just stop. It's been days and days now and still hasn't uploaded all images (has gone from 54 to 39). It works for a bit and then hangs. Frustratingly slow when it does work and I have to keep a very close eye on it or it will just stop until I restart the app. It will also upload an image, fail, try uploading again, fail, try again, fail, in a constant loop. Close the cover and uploads stop. I believe this all started happening when v4.4 came out. Ready to drop using Dropbox...

Hey @nebo487 - thanks for letting us know about this.

In regards to the issue you are seeing now, kindly note that Dropbox waits for your phone to have a good Wi-Fi or data connection to begin uploading your photos. If you’re still seeing a “Waiting to upload” error, try these steps to solve the problem:

  1. Keep the Dropbox app open for a few minutes. If the message goes away on its own, then your photos should upload.
  2. Change the way you upload:
    • Try uploading with only Wi-Fi enabled
    • Try uploading with both Wi-Fi and cellular data enabled
  3. Upload using a different Wi-Fi network.

If the message doesn’t go away after trying these steps, then log a ticket with our team to have this reviewed with all of our tools available.

In the meantime, I am including all the relevant information about this issue I could gather from other users that have reported such problems in the past. I also moved your post to the relevant thread to keep things neat and maintain all the info related to this case in one place - for easy future references.

From what has already been discussed in this thread, the issue you are seeing may be due to a feature on newer Samsung OS versions called App Optimization. It is designed to freeze applications that are deemed to be untouched by the user and may interfere with some background services.  You may find this setting following these steps:
  1. Go to your system (not Dropbox's!) settings ( most likely a gear icon on the notification shade)
  2. Tap on "Battery" (found under System category) for Android 7.0/ "Apps & Notifications" on Android 8.0
  3. Find "App optimization" section and tap on detail on Android 7.0/ "App Info" on Android 8.0
  4. Find Dropbox in the list and tap on it - same for all OS.
  5. Change the option to "Disabled for" / Tap on "Battery" , then "Battery Optimization" (if needed) and then "Background Activity". Toggle it off and on again.

Furthermore, if for any reason you accidentally set your mobile app to "Always Sleeping App" you should disable it. Here is how to check:

1. Go to Settings

2. Device Maintenance

3. Battery

4. Always Sleeping Apps.

Should our mobile app show up there then press and hold to delete from the list.

I hope this helps and please let me know how this goes.  Thanks!

Why is this happening once again on the latest version of Android?  Photos aren't being uploaded in the background!

I see that my Galaxy S8 put Dropbox back on the always sleeping list.
Probably the best bet is to turn off App Power Monitor entirely.

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Device maintenance
  3. Battery button
  4. 3-dot menu
  5. Advanced settings
  6. App Power Monitor
