About a month ago, I noticed my documents are very slow to open from the Dropbox desktop client. It's seems like I'm actually opening them over the web but they are supposed to be synced to my PC.
Any thoughts?
Dropbox is just a folder like any other on your computer. When you're opening a file locally, you're not opening it from the Dropbox client; you're just opening a local file from a local folder. It shouldn't matter if the file is in the Dropbox folder or elsewhere on your computer. Because of this, it's unlikely that Dropbox is causing them to open slowly.
Try opening a file outside of the Dropbox folder, or moving a file from the Dropbox folder to another location and opening it. Do you still have the problem?
That's right. And it's always worked like that. I have over 100 GB of files that I can access fine. My only problem is with Office files. For example: If I open an excel file from my Dropbox folder, it takes maybe 45-60 seconds to open. If I move that file to my desktop, or any other location, it opens instantly.
I am running windows 10, but it started happening before, on Windows 7.
Hey there. The same started happening to me since yesterday.
I'm Also on windows 10 here.
I go to an dropbox local folder and suddenly windows explorer goes "working on it" and takes a big while to show the contents.
Other folders on the same HDD are loaded instantaneously.
PS: I'm running dropbox on a secondary HDD, which I use mainly as a file storage.
Hmm. In my case, apparently it was an OS problem. I hadn't reboot for quite some time, which seems to have solved the issue
I have a similar situation but ONLY from within the desktop client... when I open Dropbox and sign in, it recognises my log-in instantly, then when I want to review/add files and click on the files tab (on the top left of the screen) is when it gets really, really slow and takes several minutes for my folders list to appear - once is does get that far however, viewing/editing/moving files is fine, I guess the question I find myself asking and if anyone can shed any light on it that would be great is "does the total number/file size of all photos and videos affect the speed with which Dropbox 'finds them' " I ask because this speed issue seems to have begun with my installing Windows 10 and also having recently added a lot more pictures and videos to my account.
Same problem, local DB folder v.slow opening time (working on it) since Win 10 upgrade.
Solutions please DB developers?
NB: Problem only related to local DB folder
Your first test should be to shut down the DB app, and test the opening performance of the DROPBOX folder, you should not see the DB insync ticks or spinning syncing icon overlays.
These are the likely cause of the delay in its the DB app, if the delay still remains then it is unlikely to be dropbox.
If it does then appear, you can try a reindex by ensuring your first in sync, then 2 unlinking and relinking the account causing the indexs to be rebuilt. (this can take some time).
Classic developer response... no response whatsover to my original October 30th posting (2 months in waiting) then when a response is received, it's completely devoid of any 'how to' direction because the developer knows what he/she is talking about and PRESUMES that everyone else does too.
Yours is a classic Noob (NOn OBjective) reply.
1) Im not the developer Im a user just like you.
2) Who made you queen? I was posting to the OP not you.
3) No how to? You need some bread crumbs to find it eh? app/cog/pref/acc/unlink
4) I even said what the likely cause of the slowing is, and how to evaluate if thats so aka the icon overlays and test by shutting down the app.
