Can you confirm if I got the shared links' behavior right?

Can you confirm if I got the shared links' behavior right?

Hello Dropbox community...

I wanted to ask for your expertise to review & confirm\correct a few observations regarding share links and file security:

  • Files are not accessible via share links by default.
  • All that is required to create a share link is:
    • web-GUI: Click the Share button.
    • macOS: Select the Copy Dropbox Link option on the file in macOS Finder.
    • Windows: I am sure there is something equivilent to macOS but I'm just not sure what it is.
  • With free accounts, regardless of any other security setting, files with share links are accessible to whomever has the link.
  • The only indication that a file has a share link is the presence of a small chain-link icon next to files that have a share link created for them.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and comment.

Hey @cyberzeus, welcome to the Dropbox Community!

At first, when you send a shared link to others (regardless of whether they have a Dropbox account or not), they should be able to access the content of the folder or the file associated with it.

You can find how to create a shared link from the web, the desktop app, and the mobile app, here

Finally, you are right, an indicator of a file or folder having a shared link is a chain icon that appears next to it.

Let me know if you have any other questions, thanks!

You also have the option to select INVITE in the top right corner of browser window to achive the same end result of allowing someone else to view and collaborate on a document. As far as indicators of who is sharing the document, in the browser, when the doc is open you will see your avatar and the avatar (or initials) of anyone sharing the document in small ovals in the top right corner of the window.
