How can I delete files and folders

How can I delete files and folders

Jim-J-C

By accident files got loaded into drop box and I cannot delete them.  I tried to follow the instructions be there is no "Delete" prompt to click on.  I have an online account tried to add an icon to the desk top and ended up down loading a new program.  I then deleted that version and some how my whole desk top was added as a folder.  How do I delete those unwanted folders and files?

Hi @Jim-J-C, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

It sounds like you enabled the automatic computer backup feature in the Dropbox desktop application. Could you first try disabling the computer backup from Dropbox using the steps in the above article to see if this helps?

Afterwards, you'll get the option to move the folders and files back to their previous locations, which will also delete them from the Dropbox account online.

Keep me updated with any progress!

Hi Jay,

I was able to uncheck the box for back up my PC.  I do notice that it is still adding files.  If I delete the "My PC folder from drop box will it affect my desk top?  I do notice that none of the my folders are now marked with the green "Dropbox" icon.

Thanks,

Jim

Did you uncheck all the boxes in the computer backup window? Did you choose the option to Keep my files on my computer, which will move them back to the default locations on your machine?

I think I did.  How can I check?  Also If and when I delete the unwanted folders, will that free up my available Dropbox space?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jay,

Drop box took over my computer, my desk top is only in Dropbox and Dropbox is taking up 340 Gigs of storage in my hard drive.  I have no way of moving them back to my desk top.  I am afraid if I do go on a monthly plan I will loose everything.  How do I remove all the files from Dropbox without loosing them completely and have them back on my desktop and not have to pay for Dropbox?

Thank you,

Jim

Hey there, @Jim-J-C!

If you've managed to disable the Computer backup feature, you can drag-and-drop those files or folders back to their original paths at any time.

Have you tried relocating the content from your Dropbox folder to your device? And yes, that would free up your Dropbox quota.
