I unknowingly deleted files, but no evidence in "activity"

Apparently I deleted files, but no evidence in "activity".

In a panic I found the parent file in the deleted files folder and restored it, but I didn't check the contents and most of the contents are now missing and I think I permanently deleted the rest of the other deleted content before checking.

I don't know how so many files were deleted without me knowing. It couldn't have been an accidental wrong button as that would have taken ages (hundreds of files and folders involved).

Help!

Permanent deletion removes them from Events and means they are, I'm afraid, impossible to restore.
