Delete, edit, and organize
Solve issues with deleting, editing, and organizing files and folders in your Dropbox account with support from the Dropbox Community.
I copy/pasted a folder with a large amount of files to dropbox in case something ever happened to these photos. However, the copied files quickly took up too much space on both dropbox and my computer. I want to delete the copies before my computer starts losing files due to using up too much space. However, I'm worried if I delete the copies I made in dropbox, the original files in my libraries will be deleted as well. Is this possible?
Hi @Fellian, thanks for dropping by on the Dropbox Community!
If you copy a file or a folder to your Dropbox account, that is considered to be a seperate item than the original.
As such, you can go ahead and delete it. Once you do, the copied item will be removed from your Dropbox account, so you won't be able to see it on the website, in your Dropbox folder on your computer, or the mobile app.
I hope this helps!

If something happens to the original files in an account, will it affect the copied files located in another account? As in if the originals are deleted or modified, will the copies get automatically deleted or modified?
Hi @tj_,
If there are real copies, then No - the two copies are handled independently. Otherwise, if you mean shared file between account, then Yes - there are no copies, but a single file and once changed - it's just changed - everywhere.
Hope this clarifies matter.
