How do you mean you went to the initial link? Was it a shared link where when you clicked on it the photos were available to view via the Dropbox website? OR did you go to the www.dropbox.com/home page and see them in your account in a folder you made?

If it was a link then the other person can delete them at any point and the link would stop working. You need to ask them to re send it.
If its a folder have a look at www.dropbox.com/events to see whats happened and this should help: https://help.dropbox.com/delete-restore/recover-deleted-files-folders
