Delete, edit, and organize
Solve issues with deleting, editing, and organizing files and folders in your Dropbox account with support from the Dropbox Community.
I have a free personal account.
I keep only critical info that I may need when not near a PC or RDT to Server.
Unable to locate anything on this forum reflecting my issue. The Drop box phone number we had says that there is an immediate call back option on support, but that is not true.
I was actively working on critical info file (MS Word) and toggling to another activity to add more data to this file. I went back and this open active Drop Box file was no longer open and in fact POOOOF gone!! It is not in "deleted", not in "recents", nowhere on Drop Box and no where on my devices. I didn't delete it as I never received any confirmation from Drop box that I always get as to deleting it locally or everywhere. It's just flat gone!!
Hi @M K.6
If you have a free account please be careful with whoever you called as it is not Dropbox. Dropbox do not accept incoming calls they instead call back when you enter a secure pin from within a Business account.
In terms of the issue Dropbox cannot do that I'm afraid. Dropbox has no control over what is open/closed/saved etc. on your device. Dropbox simply syncs it.
What is www.dropbox.com/events showing?

Thanks for your responding. I rely on Dropbox as a sort of ultimate back up. If it's there, it didn't need to be anywhere else for fear of not having the most current doc in the same place at all times.
Yes, it's a phone number i had from pre- 2015 and it now says go to the website support for an instant call back. Outgoing VM didn't distinguish between Basic/Business.
The file was already on Dropbox before I opened it this morning to edit it. It was created nearly a year ago and accessed several times in just the last week. Then it was just gone - no trace on any devices.
I did see on forum suggestions for "Events", but these are my options from the left hand Margin and there is not "Events"

That would be the Business Support phone number, when it existed, which was for customers on a paid Business plan to receive priority support. As @Mark mentioned, this level of support is now handled via a callback initiated in a Business account's Admin console. No other Dropbox plans have access to phone support.
I did see on forum suggestions for "Events", but these are my options from the left hand Margin and there is not "Events" ... Ahh ha. I see. Put "Events" in the DropBox/ Address bar.It doesn't show any activity at all for that file?
Why Dropbox removed this from the menu is a complete mystery.
If you're not seeing any activity for the file, then the file has not been syncing to Dropbox. You may have been making changes to your local copy, but Dropbox never received them.
Hmmm.
I was on Drop Box on the device and it always had the green check mark on the document icon along with all the other documents in that topic's folder.
And it's not in that device's "Recycle Bin" or anywhere else on that device.
Certainly gives great pause for the continued use of Dropbox as a safety net for critical, portable information.
If its not showing on the device then the issue is with the device, not Dropbox.
Dropbox is not in charge of saving, opening, closing or editing etc. It is JUST a syncing tool. The rest is handled by the OS and application itself.

But a complete false sense of confidence and security.
If it's not on DropBox - why:
1. Do I open dropbox to get to that document?
2. Did it show the green check mark on that document indicating that is has synchronized?
3. Does DropBox otherwise always ask for confirmation (except in this case) before deleting a file?
Just saying, I must be missing some other critical steps to ensure that when I interact with Dropbox I get a consistent result unlike what I've spent this whole morning working to recover from. I can play and play well if I understand the rules.
I appreciate Suggestions of extra steps, double checks etc.? Or just go back to the inconvenience of carrying flash drive everywhere with an exact back up flash in a physical safe?
Hey @M K.6, sorry to hear you cannot find your file.
Did you search for it through the search bar on our website?
And what does the events page show after all?
