Re: New "Delete from all computers" prompt

New "Delete from all computers" prompt

Well this new garbage is annoying (at least to anyone who's been using Dropbox for years and understands how it works):

image.png

Apparently it rolled out with 51.4.66.

Is there a checkbox in the settings somewhere to control it (other than the "Don't ask me again" one that doesn't come up until the first delete and then disappears forever as soon as you use it?).  Or can someone tell me what registry key it sets so I don't have to suffer it on every new machine / user profile I deploy to?

I hate the decisions Dropbox is making lately regarding their user experience.  First they got rid of the Public folder, now this...   they're going downhill fast.  Hello, is anyone at Dropbox actually talking to your users??

Hey RichardK26, our engineers responded back to us internally that you’d just need to dismiss it once and choose the “Don't show me again” option, where it shouldn't pop-up again.

For the time being, they wouldn't advise doing anything other than using the option you had mentioned initially, though I’ve made a note of your comments & your feedback will be taken into consideration, as everything you're sending us over helps us better understand your needs.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts & I remain at your entire disposal should you need any further clarifications. Wishing you a great rest of your day!

Hi Richard, while I don’t any info about registry keys, I can check with our dev team on our end regarding this matter for them to see if there is another way to disable this message.

I appreciate your patience on this matter.

That answer suck.

Your software interfers with the operating systems ability to erase files.

Thats viral behavour. Degrading the perfomance of the OS.

3 times now I have had to remote to machine to find out why its not working each time i find this stupid prompt asking me if I want to erase files.

If you cant create an override that doesnt interfere with the OS then dont say your compatable with the OS.

Hi Jane,

I had the same prompt before and took it out. Now I want to put it back in as I find not having the prompt is "dangerous" for accidental deletion of files.

Do you know how to put it back?

Thanks,

Sy

@Saitosan : I would suggest disconnecting the app from your account then reconnecting it, it is likley each reconnect is seen as a new instance so it will ask again. If that doesnt work, then Disconnect and Uninstall the software, then reinstall and reconnect. I know that works as I was forced to do that on a machine experencing other issues and the prompt returned.

Hey @Server_Align, I understand that this isn’t ideal to you, as you’ve already discussed it on a different conversation here & I can see that my colleague has transferred your concerns to our team specialists.

Should you need additional assistance on the matter, please do let me know here & I’ll reach out to you directly on my end.

Secondly, when it comes to your inquiry @Saitosan, I followed Dave C.5’s advice (as I’d try the same steps in case I'd like to revert my first choice) & found out that unlinking & relinking won’t bring the prompt back.

Now, Dave’s second tip will probably do the trick for you, therefore I’m just including the relevant steps below:

  • Stop Dropbox (If needed) by clicking the Dropbox icon in the system tray at the bottom of your screen. >Click on the gear icon in the Notifications panel and select "Quit Dropbox".
  • Uninstall Dropbox: [Note: If Dropbox was installed by a Windows administrator in Program Files, you will need admin permissions to remove the application.]> Click on the Start button on the bottom left of your screen, and select "Control Panel" (Windows 7), or type Control Panel at the Start screen or start menu, and click on it (Windows 10, 8 ).> Click "Uninstall a Program". >Select Dropbox from the list of programs and click "Uninstall".
  • When the uninstall finishes, reboot your computer. This will make sure the uninstall is complete.

(Note: If you’re working on a Mac, you may reference this discussion.)

Please do let us know here how get on with that & we’ll check back with you asap. Enjoy the rest of your day until we talk again!

Is it possible this "Don't show me again" option resets each time that Dropbox updates or that the computer is rebooted? I have had to dismiss this prompt more than once over the past couple of weeks but I haven't tracked the Dropbox version number.

If it is tied to Dropbox updating, this will force me to disable the Dropbox updater which is not an ideal solution.

Please make this behavior a setting that should be configurable and ideally disabled by default.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Jane thanks for your reply.  Like HoweBoards, I have seen the message multiple times on the same computer and account.  I haven't isolated the circumstances that cause a re-prompt (e.g. upgrade, etc) but regardless, dismissing it the first time doesn't appear to "stick" properly.

I still maintain your users deserve a proper configuration option to authoritatively disable this "feature".
