One file was lost after PC was reinstalled

One file was lost after PC was reinstalled

Hello. I run Dropbox on laptop (at work) and on PC (at home). I had to upgrade my PC recently and do a fresh installation of OS. I did a careful backup of my Dropbox data, before the PC went to the service.

While my PC was in the service for a week, I worked exclusively on my laptop and created an updated version of one certain PowerPoint file. When my new PC got back home, I installed Dropbox and to expedite data transfer, I used all files from that Dropbox backup, thinking that the PowerPoint file will be updated (based on timestamp) with its recent version created on the laptop. However, this was not the case. I now have the old version of that file (from the backup), not the new one (created in the meantime).

Searching in the "history" was not successful, I only see the single older file, not the recent.

Is there any chance to recover that lost newer version of that file? It is still within 30 days...

Thank you,

David

Hi @DaweP, I'd be happy to help!

Can you also check your Events page in order to have a more detailed idea of what happened?

You can also restore the older version of the file, provided you see it there.

If not, then there's a chance the file never synced to the website.

I hope this helps!

Hi Megan,

I appreciate your help, thank you.

Interestingly, the Events page does not report anything about this particular file. It is very strange. Certainly something went wrong when I re-introduced the files to Dropbox folder in the new PC. If I had it simply let synchronizing (be it for hours?), I am sure I would have not had this issue. In other words, I should have let all data be synchronized from the cloud.

Still, I wonder whether it is possible to somehow search in the history (by Dropbox operators) and search for a particular file, if I provide its name, original location (in my folders structure) and date of change into which I am interested (24th Nov 2021). I am sure this had to be synchronized to the server. I can find only the older one version, 19th Nov 2021, which does not contain several days of my work... It is certainly not the end of the world, but I am very disappointed by this. But it has to be my fault (although I do not know what was it specifically)...

D.

Hey @DaweP, I hope you're doing well!

If you were not able to find any trace of said file on the events page, that means it might not have synced to our servers.

That would explain why you can't find any past versions of it.

If you need anything else, I'm here.
