Unable to delete Dropbox files in OSX that are no longer synced

Unable to delete Dropbox files in OSX that are no longer synced

Unable to delete Dropbox files in OSX that are no longer synced. Trying to free up space on my MAC. Backed up all my selected files to DropBox and disabled automatic sync.  When attempting to delete the files in the Dropbox folder on OSX the following error message appears:

dropbox Faye.jpg

I DON'T want to delete it from my Dropbox account. Only from my computer. ¿? TIA

Hi @MCabZ,

Just unlink the device from your account (Preferences -> Account tab -> Unlink) and remove Dropbox folder. After update, link the device back to your account and the removed Dropbox folder gonna come up. 😉

Hope this helps.

Hi there @MCabZ, I'd be happy to help on this.

Generally, when you delete a file that's in your Dropbox folder, it'll be deleted from the desktop app on your computer and your account.

This is due to syncing, which makes sure that any changes you make to your files are consistent throughout the website and your connected devices.

Based on your screenshot, could you clarify if you've selected the file to be ignored so that it doesn't sync to the website?

Have a look and let me know whenever you get the chance. Thanks!

Lusil, thank you for your kind reply. The screenshot I sent was to illustrate the notification I get when deleting any file from my MAC within the Dropbox folder. Wish to delete all the folders and files within the Dropbox folder ONLY on my MAC not on my online Dropbox. Sync has been disabled. The message sent is confusing because it seems to indicate that files will be deleted online as well. Not a question of ignoring the file to not be synced, it is a matter of simply deleting it.

Am planning to update OSX to Big Sur and need space for the update. Plan to activate sync after the update and wold appreciate if you could please inform me if it is possible to select what files and folders online can be synced. TIA
