Delete, edit, and organize
Solve issues with deleting, editing, and organizing files and folders in your Dropbox account with support from the Dropbox Community.
Dropbox deleted my folder and told me that I did it (I did not, I was not even in dropbox when it happened). Can anyone tell me why/how the file got deleted and why I'm unable to re-add it? Whenever I try to re-add, I get the message, "We were unable to complete your request." (I am not out of space.) Also, under the "Who can access" column, the folder says, "Limited". What does this mean? Have I permanently lost this folder?? (Sadly, the sender of the file has passed away, so it can't be re-shared.) Is there any possible way to get this folder back? How did it get deleted in the first place??
Hey @JF31, thanks for joining our Community and sorry to see you're having trouble.
Just to clarify, Dropbox wouldn't actually delete this folder, but let's try to see what might have happened.
I assume this is a shared folder, right? If you go to your events page, do you see any events related to this folder?
And if you locate the folder in your deleted files page, are you able to restore it from there?
Let me know how it goes.

Hi! Yes, this is a shared folder. The events page says, "You removed your access to the shared folder love u baby" on 9/13/2022 4:45 PM; however, I did NOT do this! I was not even in Dropbox when it happened!!! I was working on my laptop and received a pop-up message that "I" had deleted it, so I immediately signed in to find the file had been deleted! I was not able to re-add the folder from the deleted files page when I tried. (And, as of today, I am unable to locate the folder on the deleted files page for some reason.)
On a side note, under the column "who can access" (or something like that), it said "limited". Any idea what that means? Any idea why Dropbox told me I removed the file when I was not actively working in Dropbox???
Sadly @JF31 Dropbox always says 'you' removed access to a shared folder even if you didnt.
If you ask somebody else in the share to reinvite you it should work again 🙂

Hi @JF31, as @Mark stated, if a shared folder has been removed from your account, then it means it won't be possible to add it back. You'd need to ask the owner of the folder to invite you to join it again.

Thanks for the info, Mark! Unfortunately, the only other person in the shared folder has passed away. ☹️
Thanks for the info, Jay. Sadly, the person who shared the folder with me has passed away. I'm assuming his dropbox account was deleted since it "disappeared" from my shared folders. ☹️
