I would like to delete some uploaded photos from Dropbox but to not want them deleted from my iPhone. Does anyone know how to do this?

Hi @mcgroove, thanks for posting on our Community and happy Friday!

Deleting files you've uploaded to your Dropbox account won't be affecting your local copies unless you delete them yourself.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for responding. I have a new replacement iPhone 6s that Verizon sent me for my defective one. I restored everything from iCloud onto the new one. But, it uploaded my photos on from my phone to Dropbox. I turned off upload photos after the fact. Then, when I deleted one of the files on Dropbox, it deleted the same photo on my iPhone. I can't figure out how to delete the photos in Dropbox without deleting them from my iPhone too. It seems that if you delete a file from Dropbox, it deletes the identical file on all devices as well.

Hey @mcgroove, as Walted mentions, deleting photos from your Dropbox account will remove them from your Dropbox mobile app, but won't affect the images that are saved locally.

Could you check if the photos you're looking for are still in your phone's internal storage?

I'm trying to save space on my Dropbox drive. Not knowing in advance, my new iPhone 6 was set to photo upload when I set up Dropbox. It uploaded twenty photos from my phone. I've since tuned off the feature and any newer pictures I've taken have not been uploaded.  I've copied the photos to my internal Mac hard drive. I don't want to erase the photos from my photo app on my phone. I've tried deleting a few of them from Dropbox app and from the Dropbox drive on my Mac but it deletes them from my iPhone every time.

Could you let me know the exact steps you follow when you delete a photo?

For example, which app do you open?

I open Dropbox app or Dropbox in the finder on my Mac. I then delete a photo. Then I check the photo app and/or camera app and find that the same photo is deleted on my iPhone. I don't want to delete the photos from my iPhone. I just want to delete them from Dropbox.

Hey @mcgroove, thank you for sharing the steps with me!

The desktop application is designed to watch your Dropbox folder and sync any files placed in it. It's just like any other folder on your hard drive, but with syncing features.

Once Dropbox sees changes, it automatically syncs those to our servers and to any other device linked to your account, hence on the mobile app as well.

Have a look here

I hope this helps!

I read it. I understand that Dropbox syncs with my other devices. I just don't understand why it is deleting photos from my Photos and Camera apps on my iPhone when I delete a photo that was uploaded to Dropbox from the Dropbox drive. Oh well.
