What happens if I delete the Dropbox folder?

I am using dropbox as a back-up from my external hard drive.  My son, makes a lot of video's so he is running out of space on his hard drive.   I moved the folders into Dropbox and onto my external hard drive.  However, now when I go into my finder I have a folder called dropped box - that shows everything I saved there.  If I delete this folder from my hard drive, do I lose the data on dropbox.

Assuming that you have the Dropbox desktop application installed, and this is the Dropbox folder in which the files are syncing to your account, then deleting the folder or the files within would also delete them from the site.
