Annual vs. monthly

I've been using the free version for years. I'm thinking about getting Dropbox plus. If I do a monthly subscription, decide we want to keep it, and then we go to annual, how does that work? Would what we paid already count toward the annual subscription, or would the annual subscription start when we switch from monthly?

Changes to your billing period take affect at the end of your current billing period. So if you were on a monthly billing cycle and you decided to change to yearly, once you reached your billing date for the monthly subscription, you'd be charged for a year and your new billing date would be on the same day a year later.
