Google Authentication and my contacts in Dropbox

Google Authentication and my contacts in Dropbox

New member | Level 2

I was very displeased to see that in order to authenticate with Google, I need to allow dropbox access to my contacts.  I understand if I want to integrate the feature of sharing more easily with my contacts that, of course, then I would need to allow access.  But if I want to simplify my life and log in through Google, you are forcing me to give access to my contacts.  It feels sneaky and underhanded to be forced to give access to my contacts just to log in through Google.  Many other services will authenticate, then request additional access once a user chooses to integrate further.  Of course I did not log in through Google here.  I am so annoyed by your decision.

Welcome to the Community @ultradev

Thank you for your feedback on this authentication process. As you correctly mentioned, Google contacts are accessible from your Dropbox account for sharing purposes. I completely understand that you might not need or want that though and I have a solution for you.

You can use Google authenticator to log in and then take the steps to. Sounds like extra work, but in reality it's only 1 click on "Clear" in your "Settings" on Dropbox.com.

Feel free to get back to us with more feedback or Dropbox questions.

Thank you!

Thankfully, it doesn't do anything with your contacts. I understand your want to not give up that information, however its simply to help share and send dropbox to others for more free space. Nothing more is done with the information, and your contacts are safe from what I can tell.

I appreciate the feedback.  At this moment in time, I am not ready to give access to my contacts, even for a short period of time.  I'd rather not integrate with Google at all in this situation.  But your comment does show how easy it would have been to implement the solution the other way around.
