Just install the Dropbox app on the device, and sign-in to your account.

Can you post a screenshot of the devices part of https://www.dropbox.com/account/security ? That will show what is connected etc.

My account sign on is a Gmail but I use a different password with it. I tried the sign on with Google. That worked and added the device as a linked device. I tried to sign out and sign in with my Dropbox password. Still did not accept it. I do not see an option to post a screenshot.

Your account sign in cannot be on GMail if you are not using the Gmail password with it.

Sign in with Google is to use your google credentials. So if it worked then that is all sorted and should now be connected.

Kind of lame. I don't want my Gmail password associated with Dropbox. Only my email and a separate password as it has always been. The email me a link to sign in failed too. That is how I got the "Unknown Error. Contact Customer Support." Message. I did that and got a lame canned response-closing ticket, bye reply with no answer or solution. I then just did try the log in with Google button.

It only links to the Gmail password if you have explicitly set it up to do that. It doesnt (and cant) just 'happen'.
