I can't use Dropbox due to security measures, what can I do?

Collaborator | Level 8

I have created and maintain a 65 gig digital archive of historical information, pictures, etc., pertaining to a National Park area. One of the purposes of it is to provide the material to the National Park Service on an ongoing basis. It's all in Dropbox.

Now I'm told that the Interior Dept. does not allow access to Dropbox for security reasons, rendering the data useless in that regard. Is there any resolution or work-around for this?

Hello there @Tom V,

Unfortunately there isn't much I can suggest here as this is a security measure enforced by the Interior Department's side, as you mentioned. In this case, I would have to suggest contacting them for more information on what services you're able to use with the security measures they have put in place.

Sorry that I can't be of much help here but please don't hesitate to get back to me if you have any other questions, I'l help where I can.

Thanks!

Thanks Daphne. What is the security concern that the govt. has? Have people been hacking into Dropbox sites?

Hey @Tom V,

Since this is an internal security measure enforced on their side, it's not something that we have any knowledge or insight into I'm afraid. There could be many different reasons that specific services are not allowed in your work environment if potentially sensitive data is being handled on a daily basis. However, I wouldn't be able to say though since this is an internal security measure.

You'd need to contact those who are aware/in charge of the security in place and request more info on why this is the case. They're probably the only ones who will have the info that you need on this.

Sorry that I can't be of much help here, but do let me know if you have any other questions and I'll help where I can.

Thanks!

Hi @Tom V!

I wonder if they possibly only block the installation of Dropbox Desktop program, but might allow access via a Dropbox shared link in any browser that they already use? This might be a good workaround, unless they have blocked access to the links as well.

Joonas, people on Interior Dept. computers cannot open Dropbox links.
