I was wondering if Dropbox is secure. Any ideas?

Explorer | Level 3

Hello,

I was wondering how secure Dropbox was. I dont usually like to store my files on the cloud, but was considering Dropbox since people usually talk about it fairly well. However, how private is Dropbox? Are files client-side end-to-end encrypted? Can Dropbox access my files? Thanks!

Hey there @fvsegarra  - welcome to our Community!

As per your inquiry, note that you can find information on Dropbox security by visiting this Help Center page: https://www.dropbox.com/security#protection

For more information on our security policy, you can also check our security overview:

https://www.dropbox.com/security

As per your last query, like most major online services, we have a small number of employees who must be able to access user data when legally required to do so. But that's the exception, not the rule. We have strict policy and technical access controls that prohibit employee access except in these rare circumstances. In addition, we employ a number of physical and electronic security measures to protect user information from unauthorized access.

You can also have a look at the following Help Center article:

 https://help.dropbox.com/security/access-personal-information

I hope this helps to some extent and please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks a lot for the reply. I was wondering because there are some other cloud services that do employ client-side end-to-end encryption, thus data only belonging to the user and not being accessible by anybody else (eg pCloud, X Cloud). Is this not the case with Dropbox? Any idea between the difference between X Cloud / Dropbox? Thx

Thanks for your response @fvsegarra - how are you today?

Now, note that I won't be able to comment on 3rd party apps or services but when it comes to Dropbox, keep in mind that we protect files in transit between our apps and our servers, and at rest. Each file is split into discrete blocks, which are encrypted using a strong cipher. Only blocks that have been modified are synced. Click here to learn more!

Let me know if you have any more questions that I can help with in the meantime; I'll be happy to follow up.

Gotcha, so just to be clear. Dropbox files are secure, but Dropbox holds my decryption keys so that Dropbox employees / Governments can access my data only when needed. Correct?
