Missing files on desktop after I deactivacted my account.

Missing files on desktop after I deactivacted my account.

Explorer | Level 3

Earlier today, my partner deactiveacted her account and her desktop files all got deleted. Seconds later, the Dropbox Files Foldered appeared and estimates only 10% of the files are there now. Now, she can't even log back into her account to see if she can recover some more files.

What are the steps to recover the 90% of the files that are missing from the desktop?

Are the files even recoverable?

Can someone from Dropbox reactivate the account?

Hi @er99, thanks for messaging the Community!

Generally, if a Dropbox account has been deleted by the user, then it wouldn't be possible to recover the account or the files within, even on our end here.

Could you clarify exactly how they deactivated their account? Did they unlink it from the Dropbox desktop application, or did they delete the account from the site directly?

Keep me posted!

She manually deactivated her account herself. She didn't know that it would remove files from her computer.

Is deactivating the same as deleting an account?

Hey @er99, if the account was deleted by following these steps, the files won't be found on the website because the account isn't available anymore

However, the contents of the Dropbox folder should still be on the computer.

Do they remember seeing the files in question locally, before deleting the account?

Yes, the files were on her local. Once she deactivated her account, she saw files and folders on her desktop disappear.

In that case, have you or her checked the computer's recycle bin/trash can @er99?
