My account is reporting out of space even after removing all files. Any ideas?

New member | Level 2

I have deleted and removed all files/ folders from my Dropbox and it still says I have to buy space! Maybe I should be using We Transfer? Why doesn't it recognise that I'm not storing any data and therefore, I should be able to use the 2GB of free data? I'm not sharing data, so that can't be the problem.!

Hey there @films, sorry to hear about this.

Could you clarify where exactly are you seeing this message or provide a screenshot of it perhaps?

In the meantime, note that you can view your current quota usage on the following page:

https://www.dropbox.com/account/plan

Generally speaking now, if your Dropbox account is over quota then only syncing stops. Nothing will be removed and syncing will resume when you bring your account under quota again.

To get your account under quota you can do any of the following:

  1. Upgrade your account – check out www.dropbox.com/plans for other information.
  2. Increase your quota using referrals bonuseshttps://help.dropbox.com/space/earn-space-referring-friends or other promotions.
  3. Leave any shared folders that put you over quota.
  4. Move files that don't need to sync out of your Dropbox folder.

I hope this information helps to some extent and please keep me posted on your findings!

I deleted almost all my files and it still says I have no room.

Hey @ETP, thanks for the nudge!

If you’ve run out of space, you’d have to delete enough files to get back underquota. As you mentioned that your account is still showing as being full, it looks like your deleted items wouldn’t add up to make enough space to allow you to sync across your devices, if that’s bothering you.

I hope this clarifies matters to a certain extent!

Hi Jane,

Thanks for the attempt, but that cannot be the issue as I've deleted almost every file. The only files left are a handful of word documents.

Thanks, ETP

Re: Space

Hi @ETP!

Have you made sure that there are no shared folders taking up space on your account too?

These might be the culprit here so I'd suggest taking a look at your account's sharing tab to make sure we've covered all bases here.

If that's the case indeed, you'll need to leave them (as suggested in my initial response on this very same thread) to put your account under quota again.

Let us know what you find!

My account says "shared" was the problem with 2.54 GB of space. (Only 1 MB of files)  I deleted all the folks on the account and "only you" remains on everything I have. So I am not sharing anything. Why does my dropbox still say its Full? I cannot free up space.Shared Files vs Regular Files.pngOnly You.png

Hi @odioc; I think I replied to you on another thread of yours a little while ago. Have you seen my response there?
