Referral invitation took far too long to arrive

I was helping a friend set up a new computer & laptop and wanted to use Dropbox to help them sync files between the two. I sent a referral invitiation from my account which asked us to wait 5 minutes. After 15 it hadn't arrived so I tried to re-send, still nothing happened. He needed a Dropbox account so I had to set him up without the referral - one of the two referral emails arrived over an hour later and far too late to be of any use as we needed it working then. The link of course now doesn't work as he is already a member. How can we get our additional space since we attempted to use the system in good faith but it let us down?
