Hi there,

I pay for Dropbox Plus on two different accounts.  I would like to pay for just for one account and revert the second one back to a free version.  Some of the files are shared, but I'd like to have different files associated with different email addresses.

Can you let me know how to ensure that this happens?

Ah, thanks for the clarification @GGG_GGG1.

Generally speaking, if any of your Dropbox accounts is over quota then only syncing will stop. Nothing will be removed and syncing will resume when you bring your account under quota again.

To get your account under quota you can do any of the following:

  1. Upgrade the account in question – check out www.dropbox.com/plans for other information.
  2. Increase your quota using referrals bonuses or other promotions.
  3. Leave any shared folders that put you over quota.
  4. Move files that don't need to sync out of your Dropbox folder.

For convenience, note that you can always view your current quota usage on the following page: https://www.dropbox.com/account/plan

Hey there @GGG_GGG1  - how are you today?

If you would like to merge your files into a single Dropbox account, please follow these steps:

  1. Sync all content of the account you no longer want to use to a computer by signing in to your desktop application and syncing its content to this device. Make sure all of the content is syncced by verifying that Selective Sync is not enabled, and that all files are available "locally" if you used Smart Sync.
  2. When the desktop client is done syncing, you can unlink it following the instructions in this article: https://www.dropbox.com/help/mobile/unlink-relink-computer-mobile
  3. Log in with the account you want to keep and choose Install. If you’re merging two personal accounts, the Dropbox folder of the account you no longer want to use will be renamed "Dropbox (Old)" and the account you want to keep will now be using the new "Dropbox" folder.
  4. Locate the "Dropbox (Old)" folder in your computer and open it.
  5. Locate the "Dropbox" folder, for the account you want to keep, and open it.
  6. Copy or move the files from the "Dropbox (Old)" folder to the new "Dropbox" folder. If you receive a message indicating that there is already a file named “.dropbox” in your new Dropbox folder, choose “Don’t copy”.
  7. The merge will be completed after you finish copying or moving all the content desired into the new "Dropbox" folder and the changes sync.

Please note that this process will not transfer membership to shared folders. It will only transfer the folders themselves. If you choose to merge accounts, you may need to rejoin any shared folders you were previously a member of.

I hope this helps and please keep me posted!

PS: Don't forget to cancel the automatic renewal of the account you'll be dropping to avoid further charges when you're done with this process as per the following Help Center article: https://help.dropbox.com/accounts-billing/cancellations-refunds/cancel-subscription

Hi there,
I don't want to merge the accounts; as I was saying, I still want to keep two separate accounts, I just want to make sure that I am only paying for one, and that if my space on that account compresses, I can still associate files with that email address.
Thanks

Hey there Alan ( @alanfine ) - how are you today?

From what I understand you'd like to unlink the account your desktop app defaults to so you can then link it to your second account - correct me if I'm wrong please.

If that's the case indeed, can you let me know what kind of device you're using?

If not, please forward me a screenshot of what you're referring to so I can assist further.

Thanks in advance!

PS: I removed your email address from your post for security purposes. If you'd like to get in touch with our Support team for account specific assistance, you can do so from this page:  https://www.dropbox.com/support
