VAT on invoice of PLUS plan

vansteenw
New member | Level 2

I just started a small "company" on top of my dayjob and I am looking for a service like Dropbox but need more space than the Dropbox free plan offers. Given that the "company" is just me and I don't need any collaboration, the PLUS plan seems best. The company options require at least three users (or payment for three users). Can I get my VAT information mentioned on the invoice of a PLUS plan? If that's not an option, I'll have to look at other services. Thanks.

Hi there @vansteenw, welcome to the Dropbox Community!

Currently, you can add a VAT ID number to your Dropbox account if you're on a Professional or Business subscription. You can find more info about this here.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Also to add you don’t need YOUR vat number on to claim VAT back. You just need the other organisations. Simply put it through your accounts as normal.

Just be cautious that it is described as a home user product and so some tax jurisdictions may say it’s not eligible for relief.

Exactly as @Mark mentions, spot on!

Although the Professional and Business subscriptions allow you to put a VAT number in directly, if you want to use a Plus plan, you can change your account name to your business name as described in this article as a workaround.

Please note that, in the steps offered, you can put your VAT number in your name and the company's name in the surname fields, or vice versa.

I hope this helps a bit more, @vansteenw

I don't think I have a professional or business account.  Does that mean that I cannot do this?

You can check your account's subscription by going to the Plan tab

If you find that you have a Plus account, you can try out the workarounds that are proposed in this thread.

Tax compliant invoice showing VAT - after all these years still not possible !

I am a self employed individual in Germany with a VAT number and now want to go back onto a subscription account as run out of space. Previously for years 2013 -2016 also on a subscription plan but stopped as invoice was non tax compliant (and therefore rejected as a business expense by the Finanzamt) and then to rub salt into the wounds had to pay Irish VAT on top which could not reclaim. Now, after having reviewed the various community posts and Dropbox official notes, it appears that little in the way of progress has been made in this regard. Apparently if one subscribes to a much more expensive business plan then it is possible, after the cumbersome necessity of acontacting the billing dept, of getting a proper tax invoice but even this seems to be hit and miss according to various blogs. Why is it not possible for such a high tech company producing such a wonderful easy to use product not able to set up an easy to use self edit invoicing system with ability to include a VAT number ?  Very tempted to move over to MS that has all these subscription  invoice features but still hanging on to the minimal space have left on Dropbox.

Hi @vantage, I'm sorry to hear about your frustrations with this!

Since you have a similar query, I've just moved your post here as the info provided might be useful for you.

Please bear in mind that for the individual plans, Professional is designed for use in a business setting, while the Plus plan is designed for personal use.

Hope this helps!

Unhappy with the Dropbox options (pay a reasonable amount for a private account but don't be treated as a company, or get a stupidly expensive account with lots of options I dont need as a very small company) I ended up going with pcloud. Seems just as reliable after a couple of months of use, European company, and much cheaper. I got a lifetime 500GB for much less than a yearly Dropbox. Too Nad, because I had been a very happy Dropbox user from the times when they still had a yearly hunt/challenge (now that was a cool time!)
