My old computer has Dropbox Desktop app, works great! My new computer has Dropbox Desktop already installed. But it's empty, how do I activate the Desktop app please?

Hey @cmy; thanks for using Dropbox and welcome aboard!

Can you please make sure that you've logged into the same account on both devices?

If you already did, can you send us a screenshot of the app's exact status as shown in your menu bar/system tray?

Thanks so much!

Walter, Thanks for your reply, sorry for delay. Yes, I'm logged in as same person on both computers. But now think my son set up my old computer to sync with a local Dropbox folder, not the DropBox App. Can I do the same on this new machine.  I saw a post somewhere about altering my Preferences to "Local Folder". Can you advise how to do this?  I can see "Settings" on the website, but can't find Preferences.

Hey, @cmy

Essentially, the Dropbox app and the folder is the same thing.  When you download the app, a Dropbox folder is created with all of your account's content which sync online.

As Walter suggested, could you hover your mouse which should be on your menu or task bar, and let us know what the status of the Dropbox Desktop application is?

Thanks for your clear explanation. I installed the Dropbox app (although first I had to unlink 8 old computers!). Then Dropbox downloaded my files to a Dropbox folder, on the same level as Documents, Pictures etc. There's a Dropbox icon on the taskbar, and a desktop shortcut to Dropbox.  So everything looks OK!!  Grateful for your virtual reassurance, very helpful when one's self-isolating. Keep safe everyone.
